101 Cars Pack Mason City Motor Speedway for Sponsor Appreciation Night; Murgic, Green, Skauge, Kraus & Goepel Score Victories
MASON CITY, Iowa (April 26, 2026) — A total of 101 race teams checked in through the back gate Sunday night at Mason City Motor Speedway for our Season Opener presented by Kevko Racing & Bat Wing Chassis, delivering a packed pit area and another exciting evening of weekly racing action. Five different drivers earned the right to stand in front of the brand-new Victory Lane sign presented by Rookie's Rockin' Sports Bar / Tap'd / Seven's Restaurant & Steakhouse on Sponsor Appreciation Night.
Car counts included 16 Shane Monson Construction USRA Modifieds, 16 Christie Door Company USRA Stock Cars, 20 Window World of Mason City B-Mods, 20 Busch Light Hobby Stocks, and 29 Charlie’s Auto Repair Outlaw Mini Mods.
The first feature of the night belonged to the Busch Light Hobby Stocks, where Kolby Goepel made the most of his pole starting spot and never looked back en route to the $500 victory. Goepel had his hands full throughout the 20-lap main event as Joshua Monson applied pressure lap after lap, but the 50K machine stayed smooth and steady for the win. Gavin Bartel finished third, followed by Scott Dobel and Jeremy Wegner.
The Charlie’s Auto Repair Outlaw Mini Mods were next to hit the speedway, and fans were treated to one of the most entertaining races of the evening as several drivers charged from mid-pack toward the front. In the end, Ben Kraus parked in victory lane after 15 hard-fought laps to claim the $300 top prize. Ben Mattick challenged throughout and settled for second, while Bobby Ruehlow, Garrett Medlin, and Chevy Wallin completed the top five.
The Window World of Mason City USRA B-Mods followed, and with the racing groove glued to the bottom lane, Taylor Skauge used a flawless run to dominate for the $700 payday. Ben Moudry stayed within striking distance but couldn’t find a way around the leader. Mason City favorite George Nordman finished third, with Jake Richards fourth and Trevor Fecht fifth.
Following the B-Mod feature, track officials freshened the racing surface to give fans and drivers an even better show for the final two divisions.
The Christie Door Company USRA Stock Cars then rolled onto the speedway, where Derek Green completed a perfect weekend by going 3-for-3 in feature wins. The Granada, Minnesota standout collected the $600 winner’s share after holding off multiple challengers throughout the event. Jason Schlangen crossed the stripe second, Chanse Hollatz third, Travis Shipman fourth, and Todd Staley rounded out the top five.
The nightcap featured the Shane Monson Construction USRA Modifieds, and it was Nick Murgic stealing the spotlight. Starting fifth, Murgic sliced through traffic using the middle and bottom lanes to secure his first-ever Modified victory. Despite early pressure from Landon Volkman and Harley Dais, Murgic pulled away late for an impressive win and the $1,000 payday. Harley Dais finished second, Alex Williamson third, Landon Volkman fourth, and Taton Hansen fifth.
